Wildcard berth or division title, a playoff spot is one of six shots to a life beyond December 28. Not only can the Jets fill one, but they still have a decent chance to get that bye week bonus. Winning the last four games of the season helps the most, obviously, but a little help around the league would be nice. Just ask the Arizona Cardinals, they clinch their division win or lose this week if the Jets beat the 49ers on Sunday.
Here are the matches to check out and how they may influence the Jets’ playoffs chances.
Step it Up AFC North
Browns (4-8) vs Titans (11-1) Go Browns!
Jamal Lewis and Jerome Harrison are no Thomas Jones and Leon Washington as much as Ken Dorsey is no Brett Favre. But if somehow the Titans lose this one, as well as all of their remaining games, it’s possible the Jets could take hold of a #1 or #2 seed.
Bengals (1-10) vs Colts (8-4) Go Bengals!
If the Colts almost lost to the Browns last week, maybe the lowly Bengals can finish the job this week. That probably won’t happen, and the Colts are likely heading to the playoffs. Are they a team we’d want to see the Jets face in the first or second round?
You Play to Win the Game (and to Help the Jets’ Playoff Possibilities)
Chiefs (1-10) vs Broncos (7-5) Go Chiefs!
In the interest of leverage for a higher playoff seed as well as schadenfreude for last week, it’s time to root for Herm once again.
NFC Over AFC Rule Applies
Cowboys (8-4) vs Steelers (9-3) Go Cowboys!
Pittsburgh may be up on us for the #2 seed right now, but still they have the Ravens and the Titans to take on (in a row) after this showdown with Dallas. The playoff pendulum can get a momentous swing in our favor with a Cowboys win here, and they’ve had since Thanksgiving to rest and prepare.
Redskins (7-5) vs Ravens (8-4) Go Redskins!
What’s scarier, the ferocious Ravens D or the surprising success that is QB Flacco? Either way, Baltimore is not a team anyone would feel comfortable playing right now— or in the playoffs for that matter. This Sunday night showdown is worth eyeing for that matter alone.
Division Domination
Patriots (7-5) vs Seahawks (2-10) Go Seahawks!
Deion Branch faces his former team for the first time since departing. He could have faced them plenty of times by now had he landed with the Jets. Hope he’s fired up. A healthy Branch and Matt Hasselbeck, gives Jets fans hope for an upset on the West Coast— one that would tighten the Jets grip on that AFC East title.
Dolphins (7-5) vs Bills (6-6) Go Bills!
The numbers speak for themselves in this one. The Bills are 0-3 in the division and 4-4 in the conference. We want the Bills to win, but we want it to exhaust them as before they head downstate next week.
